Originally developed under the auspices of the Washington National Cathedral CGJR, Jean, with support from an International Advisory Group, worked with the leaders of 10 diverse faith communities in Mozambique to found the first national-scale multi-faith collaboration against malaria-” PIRCOM”- to equip religious leaders in the fight against malaria.
PIRCOM was originally co-Chaired by Anglican Bishop Dinis Sengulane and Mozambique Muslim Congress leader Sheik Hasan Makda, is funded by USAID, as a collaboration between the Mozambican Ministry of Health, ADRA prime contractor on behalf of PIRCOM with USAID, various development NGOs and diverse Christian, Muslim, Hindu and Baha’i communities. Bishop Dinis Matsolo is the Executive Director. PIRCOM recruits, organizes and equips faith leaders to end deaths from malaria. In the first three years, 27,000 faith leaders were mobilized using a cascade training model, in four provinces. The PIRCOM model has been successfully adapted in other countries including Nigeria ( NIFAA) and Sierra Leone.
